Book Review: Dying for Christmas by Tammy Cohen

Dying for ChristmasWhat’s it about?BBC 2014

I am missing. Held captive by a blue-eyed stranger. To mark the twelve days of Christmas, he gives me a gift every day, each more horrible than the last. The twelfth day is getting closer. After that, there’ll be no more Christmas cheer for me. No mince pies, no carols. No way out …

But I have a secret. No-one has guessed it.

Will you?

My thoughts

Many books this year have been compared to Gone Girl but this is the only one that I’ve read so far that comes close to being as good. When I read Gone Girl I was totally sucked into the story and then was completely blown away and angry that I had been fooled – this book did that all over again!

Narrated by Jessica, it’s obvious why she would be so easily enticed by Dominic and his charm but I did find how she completely disregarded her personal safety somewhat unbelievable…but the plot wouldn’t have worked otherwise. And then what follows is an exciting, scary, thrilling read, all those old book cliches that you would absolutely expect from a gripping thriller.

Amongst the main kidnap is a sub plot of police officer Kim’s family dramas; I’m not really sure this added anything to the story overall, was a tadge annoying that she was expected to choose family or career and her husband was behaving like a right tool!

Can’t say much more without divulging to0 much of the plot but overall, I loved this book and it’s one that I would agree with that it deserves its comparison to Gone Girl. If you like a book that sucks you in, and then completely turns everything you know and have begun to trust on its head, this is for you! So many twists but I’m still not sure that I ‘get’ the ending. If you’ve read it, did you see it coming?
