Welcome to this week’s WWW Wednesday, hope you’ve all had a good week! Non-book related news, I went to see The Greatest Showman for the third time at the weekend and….it was a sing-along screening! 🙂
I’m reading The Long Fall by Julia Crouch
Glad I finally picked this one up as it’s addictive reading!
The blurb
How far would you go to protect your secrets?
Greece, 1980
Emma takes part in a shattering, violent event. An event to which she is anything but an innocent bystander.
She is only eighteen, but this marks her fall from innocence.
It will haunt her for the rest of her life.
London, now
Kate has the perfect existence: a glossy image, a glamorous home, a perfect family.
But there are cracks.
All is not what it seems.
And now the two worlds are about to collide.
Somebody’s out for revenge.
Someone who has been waiting thirty years…
I recently finished
YES! GO ME! I’ve finally finished it! Last time appearance for The Book of Forgotten Authors 🙂
The blurb
Absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder. It makes people think you’re dead.
So begins Christopher Fowler’s foray into the back catalogues and backstories of 99 authors who, once hugely popular, have all but disappeared from shelves.
We are fondly introduced to each potential rediscovery: from lost Victorian voices to the twentieth century writers who could well become the next John Williams, Hans Fallada or Lionel Davidson. Whether male or female, flash-in-the-pan or prolific, mega-seller or prize-winner – no author, it seems, can ever be fully immune from the fate of being forgotten.
What’s up next?
This is our next book club read and I’m not leaving it till the last minute this time! Never read Ishiguro before and not seen the film either so going in with an open mind.
The blurb
A contemporary classic, The Remains of the Day is Kazuo Ishiguro’s beautiful and haunting evocation of life between the wars in a Great English House.
In the summer of 1956, Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, embarks on a leisurely holiday that will take him deep into the English countryside and into his past.

The only Ishiguro I’ve read was Never Let Me Go and while I did end up loving it I don’t remember it being a very easy read. I would however give Remains of the Day a try as it does sound like an interesting story.

I’d thought it was probably wasn’t going to be a quick read, so have allowed myself extra time to read. I’ve seen the movie of Never Let Me Go, but am not a huge Keira Knightley fan so didn’t think much of it. Books are better though, right?

That sounds like a sensible plan. I always seem to leave book club picks to the last possible minute and end up having to rush them.
Books are always better (well almost always). I think that film did follow the book pretty closely, although it was a while ago.

I love The Remains of the Day, I think it’s a brilliant book. And you simply must watch the film once you’ve read it because that is also wonderful with great acting.

I started reading Never Let Me Go which I think is by Ishiguro, though I really struggled with it. I’d be interested to see what you think of The Remains of the Day though as it might prompt me to read more of his work
